Moreover, this announcement contains a list of UL2272-certified e-scooters for the public to consider buying.
Out of the thirteen e-scooters on the list, ten are now disqualified due to various reasons we explored in part 1 of this series.
Let’s take a closer look at the three pmd models left:
At first glance, the Xiaomi Mijia M365 e-scooter is available in Singapore as individual sellers are advertising it on local platforms like Lazada and Qoo10. However, the truth is it is not that simple.
We contacted the customer support of Xiaomi Singapore and found that they are not selling the M365 pmd. The staff also told us they are unsure of any future sale dates for it:
We also reached out to the individual sellers and found they either don't sell the e-scooter, or doesn’t have the certification in the first place:
To no one’s surprise, both the ES1 and ES2 e-scooters are designed and produced by Segway-Ninebot, one of the leading e-scooter manufacturer and distributor in the world.
However, there are differences that set the ES1 and ES2 apart:
The ES1 is equipped with a single white light on the front of the e-scooter. Conversely, the ES2 has a front white light, a back tail light and running lights under its footpad.
If you like to ride your e-scooter at night, you’ll love the ES2. Not only are the running lights customisable through your Segway-Ninebot app, more importantly, you don’t have to spend money to install additional lights on the ES1 should you want to ride it in the nighttime.
Fun fact: In Singapore, all e-scooter riders and cyclists have to switch on a front white light and a rear red light when they’re riding at night.
You can ride the ES1 up to a maximum speed of 20 km/h. On the other hand, the ES2 gives you an added boost of speed - up to 25 km/h. 5 km/h may seem like a small amount, but a little does go a long way.
If you frequently have to ride on rocky pathways, we suggest you choose the Segway-Ninebot ES2 over the ES1 as its front and back wheels are both padded with shock absorbing materials. On the other hand, the ES1 only has this shock absorption feature on its front wheel.
The ES1 is an older pmd model which has since been phased out by Segway-Ninebot ever since the ES2 was manufactured.
A word of caution: before you buy, always check that the undercarriage of the e-scooter carries one of the official UL logos approved by LTA. This is the surefire way to confirm whether an e-scooter is UL2272-certified or not.
Refer to this list of logos when you shop for your next e-scooter:
Not all ES2 e-scooter models in Singapore are UL2272-certified. There are several ES2s that are being retailed in the market without the certification.
If you’re looking for a legitimate source to buy a certified scooter from, come visit us at 259 Lavender Street. We’re the Official Distributor & Repair Centre of Segway-Ninebot so you can get after sales services and a free one-year warranty on your ES2 frame.
