Best Four UL2272 E-scooters for Food Delivery Riders

UPDATE [6 Aug 2019]: The PMD safety certification deadline has been moved forward to July 2020. All non-UL2272 certified devices will be auto-deregistered and cannot be used in public after July 2020. Users can continue to ride only UL2272 certified PMDs beyond the July 2020 deadline.

With the spike of delivery services in the gig economy, more and more people are exploring work as food delivery riders (e.g. GrabFood, Deliveroo, FoodPanda) as a supplementary source of income. Singapore is now peppered with riders scooting around to get their orders delivered on time. E-scooters and other personal mobility devices (PMDs) are in the business as riders complete orders usually within the neighbourhood.

While the distance they need to travel for each order might not be very far, having a device that can travel long distances on a single charge and carry a heavier load would increase the rider’s efficiency, allowing them to work longer periods at a time and complete more orders.

With that in mind, and the newly established Land Transport Authority (LTA) regulations that govern the use of electric scooters on public pavements in Singapore, we have ranked the 4 best LTA approved and UL2272 e-scooters for food delivery riders.

#1 MOST RELIABLE: Ninebot KickScooter MAX by Segway

The Segway-Ninebot KickScooter MAX is the most powerful kickscooter in the Segway-Ninebot family, with a mind-blowing maximum range of up 65 km per full charge.

The MAX offers cover a maximum range of up to 65 km per charge. That’s way more than enough juice to get you from the east to the west of Singapore in one single charge! The Segway Ninebot MAX is ideal for GrabFood delivery riders. Not only does this maximum range allow you to complete delivery orders that are further away, it also means you can complete more food delivery orders with a single full battery charge.

The 10-inch tubeless "self-healing" pneumatic tyres absorb shock to ensure a smooth and stable ride even over rough pavements or speed bumps. On top of that, the 350W to 700W of power gives the MAX sustainable propulsion for different road conditions. This makes the Segway-Ninebot MAX ideal for riders to deliver their food orders safely and finish their jobs on time.

While the Segway-Ninebot MAX was primarily designed for long distance rides, it is also great for the first and last mile of your daily commute. It has a super simple one-step folding system and can be brought on buses, trains, and can even fit into your car boot! Use the app to lock your MAX, or choose from 4 different riding modes depending on your situation. Built-in headlights and brake lights are a must for safe riding the dark after a long night delivering supper orders.

If you’re in the market for a heavy-duty e-scooter, it’s likely you have seen the Ninebot KickScooter MAX on Indiegogo. If you live in Singapore and wish to use your scooter here, be warned that the version of the Ninebot MAX you see there is the US model which does not comply with the LTA regulations.

Segway-Ninebot’s official distributor in Singapore carries a different model version from the one available on Indiegogo. The Singapore model of the Segway Ninebot MAX is LTA approved and UL2272-certified. This local model of the Ninebot MAX has a speed cap of 25 km/h, while the Indiegogo model can go up to 30 km/h.

Please note that it is illegal to ride the US model (that is not LTA compliant and UL2272 certified) in Singapore.

The LTA approved UL2272 certification for the Singapore model of the Segway-Ninebot MAX is from TUV Rheinland, one of the seven certification bodies approved by LTA. This is how the logo looks like, so make sure to check for this logo on your MAX before you make your purchase.

The Segway-Ninebot MAX is going to be the new hot favourite for food delivery riders in 2019, because of its attractive $1099 price and long distance range.

#2 HEAVY MONSTER: Electrowolf Cyclone

A close contender for food delivery riders is the Electrowolf Cyclone. Besides the Segway Ninebot MAX, the Cyclone is one of the more powerful scooters available, proven to travel up to 90 km per charge. Riders can ride freely without having to worry about running out of battery halfway through their shift and can make deliveries that require longer distance travel, or take up more orders without having to recharge.

With a max load of 120 kg, it makes it convenient for heavier riders.

The Cyclone cannot be folded and carried into public transport, it does come with a unique anti-theft system with 2 remote controls to protect your scooter from itchy hands while you zip into the mall to pick up your order.

The only setback is the hefty price tag. This is $600 more than the Segway Ninebit MAX.  It will probably deter budget conscious food delivery riders.

#3 COMFORT RIDE: DYU Seated Electric Scooter

The DYU is another favourite in the market. This is due to its built-in seat, its overall weight, and its room for additional accessories such as a rear bracket mount that can be attached to the back of the e-scooter for the rider to place and secure the food orders.

Amazingly for a lightweight device, it’s able to carry up to a weight load of 120kg, allowing riders to carry heavier orders or larger quantities with no trouble.

Even though the DYU does not have suspensions, the 12-inch front and rear pneumatic tires are extremely comfortable to travel long distances with. Regardless of the distance, this scooter provides a pleasant and secure ride.

#4 FAMILY-FRIENDLY: Fiido Seated Electric Scooter

This scooter is powered by a geared motor, which makes it popular with all kinds of riders, including heavier riders and families with kids.

One of the Fiido E-scooter's selling points - it is customisable. For riders doing delivery jobs, a front basket and rear metal basket can be installed to hold a good amount of orders. The centre opening can also be fitted with a middle cloth basket to store more contents like your personal belongings, or even a portable speaker to keep you hyped up on the job. While the Fiido is considered 'foldable', it is only the handlebar stem that collapses to reduce the scooter’s overall height.

Overall, any of these e-scooters will do GrabFood deliveries. While seated scooters are popular for a comfortable time on the job, the maximum distance range is probably the most important factor in a food delivery e-scooter, so consider this maximum long distance in your e-scooter purchase decision.

While Cyclone has the longest range, it is also the heaviest at 19.8 kg which borders at the maximum weight allowed for an LTA compliant scooter.  It also has the longest charge time and is not foldable.

On the other hand, the Segway Ninebot MAX tops our list for its long 65km distance range and 6-hour fast charge, plus its ability to be quick folded and taken onto public transport. It also has an in-built charger so you will need ever need to bring along an external charger to charge up your MAX!

So when you are planning to do GrabFood, FoodPanda, or Deliveroo part-time or full-time, consider what you really need in your work scooter.

Ask yourself these questions before you get your work scooter that can bring you income:

1. Do you want a scooter with a long distance range?

2 Do you have a budget constraint?

3. Should you want to get a branded scooter that is safe and help minimise the risk of home fires?

4. Will you get local after sales support after your purchase?

5. Is there at least a 12 month warranty on your new scooter so that you can continue working with a peace of mind that any hiccups with your scooter, you can seek warranty support locally?

6. Is it really UL2272 certified and LTA compliant? Have you checked to see if there is one of the approved certification logos on the back of the scooter that you plan to buy?
